Currumbin & Hastings Point: Light, Wood, and Wonder

There’s something about the Australian coastline that never fails to stir the soul, especially when the light, the land, and the sea conspire to create moments of pure magic.

This weekend I set out to capture the raw beauty of two iconic locations: Currumbin in Queensland and Hastings Point just across the border in New South Wales. What I found was a symphony of color, texture, and atmosphere that reminded me why I fell in love with coastal photography in the first place.

Hastings Point greeted me with a dramatic sky and a surprise rainbow that arched gracefully over the beach. The foreground was dominated by a sculptural pile of driftwood twisted, weathered, and arranged like a ceremonial structure. It felt almost like nature’s own monument, standing resilient against the elements. Shooting with my Fujifilm X-H2S, I was able to capture the full dynamic range from the deep shadows in the driftwood to the iridescent hues of the rainbow.

As the day wound down, Currumbin offered a golden finale. This place never disappoints especially when the sun dips low and the Gold Coast skyline begins to glow. These images capture that golden hour magic, where rugged coastal rocks meet the sleek silhouettes of city towers.

It’s a reminder that even in a fast-paced city, there’s still space to breathe, reflect, and watch the light change

Whether it’s the ephemeral arc of a rainbow or the enduring presence of driftwood shaped by time, these images invite us to pause and appreciate the poetry of the shore.
